Irene Mathyssen

Member of Parliament, London–Fanshawe
Status of Women
Deputy Critic Public Safety

  • Re-elected as the Member of Parliament for London-Fanshawe in 2008, the only incumbent in the region re-elected with increased total vote and percentage of popular vote.
  • Elected the Member of Parliament for London—Fanshawe in 2006.
  • She is the Federal NDP critic for the Status of Women and chair of the NDP women’s caucus. Irene is also the NDP's Deputy Critic for Public Safety.
  • Serves as the vice chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women.
  • Helped the City of London secure a $17 million federal investment in London-Fanshawe riding infrastructure, for arena improvements, road, overpass and sewer upgrades, industrial park investments, a new skate park, and investment in transit.
  • Tabled Bill C-392, "Made In Canada" legislation to secure "buy Canadian" policy on government spending.
  • Introduced Motion M-290 on February 5th 2009, to reform the Employment Insurance system.
  • Fought cuts to women’s organizations and housing programs and managed to secure some reinvestment in both.
  • Served as an Ontario MPP for the former riding of London-Middlesex (now London-Fanshawe).
  • Is a member of the Ontario Health Coalition and has served on the London and District Labour Council.
  • She has worked to establish affordable housing, including working for a local tenant advocacy group.
  • She has worked to promote better childcare and not-for-profit daycare.
  • A committed community activist, she has been involved in the London AIDS walk, the Pride Festival, the Women’s Community House, the friends of Meadowlily Woods, RE-Forest London, the London Coalition Against Pesticides and the Coalition of Canadian Immigrants.
  • A former English teacher, Irene supports student clubs and activities designed to educate and motivate students about multi-cultural, anti-racism and equity issues.
  • Irene grew-up in London-Fanshawe where she attended and later taught at Clarke Rd. Secondary School.
  • Is a graduate of London's University of Western Ontario.
  • Irene is happily married to her husband of more than 30 years, Keith and they have one daughter.
